MIU Mission

The Marine Innovation Unit (MIU) leverages existing Marine talent to: 

  1. Accelerate the adoption of advanced capabilities 
  2. Transform Naval Service capacity for technology employment, and 
  3. Retain and invest in Total Force human capital 

MIU Overview 

MIU serves as an in-demand, force multiplying organization that supports Total Force priorities, with emphasis on rapidly transitioning and enhancing both materiel and non-materiel capabilities. MIU addresses the Service's most challenging problems with highly skilled Marine reservists organized in cross-functional teams, working asynchronously in a dynamic, mission driven environment. 

MIU is a Selected Marine Corps Reserve (SMCR) unit, however service in MIU is more like that of an individual mobilization augmentee (IMA). MIU team members enjoy a work culture that promotes creativity, resourcefulness, and diversity.  

Requirements for MIU Marines: 

  • Capacity to thrive in a culture where initiative is critical, and communication is paramount. Ability to juggle numerous tasks and competing priorities. 
  • Rapidly develop an understanding of the expectations of supervisors, stakeholders, and teammates and develop strong working relationships to achieve shared goals.  
  • Build strong relationships with both external candidates and internal business partners. Proven ability to work collaboratively in teams that often operate in a disaggregated, asynchronous, and virtual environment. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; the ability to present complex matters clearly and simply; effective organizational skills; the ability to be proactive, take initiative, and follow through 

MIU Branches and Desired Skillsets 

Advanced Capabilities Branch (ACB): The ACB is organized into multiple sections to match unique skillsets to Active Component gaps. The Consulting and Strategy Section will operate adjacent to the Wargaming, Experimentation, and Prototyping and Acquisitions Sections, and lead problem-solving engagements for strategically important Marine Corps challenges across the operating forces.  

The ACB is currently seeking Tier 1 Consultants capable of leading high impact engagements for Marine senior leaders. 

Commercial Engagement Branch (CEB): The CEB is a diverse team that maps industry players and maintains situational awareness of technological and commercial advancements (e.g., innovative breakthroughs, funding, mergers and acquisitions, industry news, etc.). Team members are subject matter experts who have professional or academic experience and can facilitate outreach to key players when there is a demand signal from the Defense Engagement Branch.  

CEB is currently seeking Marines with the following expertise in one or more of the following: 

  • A deep understanding of DoD/Government data pipelines and related products/programs of record 
  • Cybersecurity policy expertise with DoD Authority to Operate (ATO) 
  • Familiarity with the Live Virtual Constructive Training Environment (LVCTE) program  
  • Experience working for the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) in Commercial Engagement or equivalent experience at management consulting firm 

Defense Engagement Branch (DEB): The DEB team supports our Active Component customers in applying technology solutions to solve Marine Corps problems. The team brings diverse expertise and additional capacity to support our customers in building impactful relationships within the vast US Government innovation ecosystem. Ultimately, our goal is to build lasting partnerships to help our customers deliver high-value, time-sensitive solutions to the warfighter.  

DEB also employs a select number of mobilized reservists as Liaison Officers (LNOs), throughout the government science and technology (S&T) ecosystem. The LNOs’ mission is to accelerate capability development by identifying existing and emerging efforts across the DoD and applying them to Marine Corps Force Design problems. These positions will come with 2 to 3 year PCS orders and are not limited to the National Capital Region. 

  • DEB is currently seeking to fill four mobilized enlisted reserve billets to support the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab’s Science and Technology branches for space, logistics, communications and Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). 

Innovation Laboratory Branch (ILB): The ILB supports Force Design 2030 and the Active Component by recruiting and training Marines with high-demand, low-density skills, conducting experimentation and prototyping, and providing direct support to Active Component stakeholders in priority and emerging technology areas.  

The ILB is currently seeking data analytics professionals with expertise in one or more of the following: 

  • Analytics data modeling  
  • Data engineering 
  • Extract, transform, load (ETL) development and/or data architecture  
  • Microsoft Power BI development  
  • Microsoft Power Platform (PowerApps, Power Automate) development 
  • Microsoft Azure development  
  • Microsoft SharePoint development and scaling  

Talent Management (TM) Section: The TM Section helps MIU to identify and acquire highly talented Reserve Marines to accelerate the capability development process for the Marine Corps. TM supports Service level Talent Management initiatives. The MIU TM section innovates processes to identify, recruit, screen, and efficiently onboard talented Marines to the MIU and share best practices with the Total Force. 

The TM Section is currently seeking individuals with the following expertise in one or more of the following: 

  • Professional recruiting and/or talent acquisition expertise 
  • Human resources planning and/or human resource management 

Support Staff: The MIU support staff enables MIU to effectively accomplish its mission. This is achieved by taking an innovative approach to traditional staff functions and processes. The objective is to maximize impact by gaining efficiency and minimizing administrative burden. It is composed of active component, active reserve, and SMCR Marines.  

The MIU Support Staff is currently seeking Marines with the following expertise in one or more of the following: 

  • Knowledge management and information management 
  • Diverse communications and/or multimedia portfolio (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)

  • Attend in-person onboarding and training from 17-20 August 2023, including travel, at the MIU Home Training Center (HTC) in Newburgh, NY.
